Gardens for Wildlife (G4W) is a free, volunteer-led program that provides advice to households and businesses on creating native habitats that support and enrich local biodiversity.
Developing outdoor spaces – large and small – strengthens our social connections while creating vital habitat for local fauna.
If you are passionate about nature, habitat gardening and are willing to share your knowledge with our community, consider joining our team of volunteer garden guides (full support and training provided).
Due to overwhelming community interest, new garden registrations are temporarily paused.
Request a garden visit or volunteer as a guide
Once you have requested a garden visit, a volunteer guide will contact you to arrange an inspection time.
2 guides will then visit your outdoor space and offer insight on enhancing the habitat of your garden.
Advice will be non-judgmental, and our guides will work with you to suggest plants and elements that will attract and support local wildlife.
A personalised garden report, based on the information discussed during the guides' visit to your garden, will be provided.
It will outline everything you need to get started, including:
You will automatically be registered to receive up to 20 free, tube stock plants through our indigenous plants voucher program at participating nurseries.
You will also be provided with a resource pack, a letterbox plaque, links to resources on gardening and have access to the large network of G4W programs.
Once your first project is complete, a follow-up visit from a garden guide can be requested by contacting environment@banyule.vic.gov.au and noting your G4W registration number (received when you first registered).
