Permit for placing a shipping container

You will need a permit to place a shipping container or storage box where closing or restricting public access is required.

This includes:

  • any street or road managed by us or VicRoads
  • any footpath, nature strip, crossover or public laneway.

No permit is required for short-term container placement on private driveways or land.

Steps to getting a placement permit

Step 1.Location

Understanding who manages your proposed placement location is important to know.

We manage most local streets in Banyule, but not all. Contact us or consult VicRoads on 13 11 70.

If the proposed placement is on a footpath, nature strip or crossover that interrupts pedestrian access, then a traffic management plan (TMP) is required.

Step 2.Documents

If applicable, create a TMP before submitting your application.

If VicRoads manages your proposed placement location, you will need to apply for a memorandum of authority first and include that with your application. This is not required if we managed the location.

Step 3.Neighbours

All residences and businesses within 150m of the proposed placement will need to be notified with a courtesy letter.

Prepare a draft notification for us to consider before you notify neighbours.

The letter should include:

  • when the container will be placed and collected
  • dimensions of the container
  • where it will be placed.

Step 4.Application

Full payment for all of the days the container will be placed is required up front.

Step 5.Response

We will respond to your application within 5 business days. We will asses your proposed location for suitability, discuss your draft letter and any next steps.

A permit begins on the day that the container is delivered.
