Things to think about when creating your plan.

• Who should I include in my plan (e.g. family members, pets and livestock)?
• What emergencies could affect me?
• Where will I go and what will I take if I need to evacuate?
• Where will I get emergency information and warnings?
• Where will I meet my family if we are separated? (e.g. kids are at school)
• How can I prepare my property for emergencies?
• How can I prepare myself financially for emergencies?
• How will I plan and prepare for my pets and livestock safety?
• How often I will practise my plan?

Putting together a home emergency kit

Part of your emergency preparation should be putting together an emergency kit of items that you will need during and after most emergencies.

Your kit should contain at least these basic items:

• portable radio, battery-operated radio or wind up;
• torch, battery-operated torch or wind up;
• mobile phone and charger;
• spare batteries;
• overnight bag with change of clothes;
• protective items, such as strong boots, sun hat, sunscreen, rubber gloves, gardening gloves and insect repellent;
• woollen blankets and sleeping bags (or have them handy);
• non-perishable food and drinking water for each person (and pets) for 3 days;
• special requirements for pets, babies and the disabled;
• medications and prescriptions;
• first aid kit;
• toiletries;
• valuable items, such as copies of photos on a CD or memory stick; and
• important documents, such as passports, birth and marriage certificates, wills, insurance papers and a copy of your home emergency plan.
