Warringal Cemetery
Warringal Cemetery is situated on a hill overlooking the Dandenong Ranges. It is the main cemetery in the area, offering limited burial plots and a range of cremated remains memorial options for purchase.
The cemetery is primarily a historic monumental cemetery, with a small lawn grave section along the Powlett Street boundary.
The lawn grave areas are known as Powlett and The Cedars, named after the cedar trees growing in the area.
Monumental sections include Roman Catholic, Wesleyan, Presbyterian and Church of England areas, along with a more recently developed section known as Pergola Walk.
History
Warringal Cemetery was established in 1855 and was managed by the Warringal Cemetery Trust until 1980, when control was transferred to the City of Heidelberg.
In 1982, the cemetery closed to the sale of new burial plots, with burials continuing only in plots that had already been purchased. In August 1993, the cemetery reopened for the sale of new burial plots and ashes memorials.
In December 1996, the trust resolved to extend Warringal Cemetery into part of the adjacent Powlett Street road reserve. The extension was designed to generate additional revenue to support future maintenance and improvements, while minimising the impact on the road reserve.
Location
Warringal Cemetery is located in Heidelberg on Upper Heidelberg Road. The cemetery is bordered by Darebin Street, Powlett Street and Brown Street.
Opening hours and access
The cemetery is open every day.
The main gates are open from 9am to 5pm, extending to 6pm during summer.
Pedestrian access is available 24 hours a day via three entrance gates located on:
- Upper Heidelberg Road
- Darebin Street (near Powlett Street)
- Brown Street (near Powlett Street)
