Sport travel grants

This program provides financial assistance to local individuals and teams participating in sporting activities. The total grant pool is $12,000.

Individual grants

  • We will fund 10% of total costs (travel, uniform and entry fees) but not to exceed $600.

Individual athletes living with disability

  • For individuals or teams travelling to participate in an all abilities program or competition amounts, we will fund 25% of total costs (travel, equipment required for travel, uniform and entry fees) but not to exceed $1500.

Key dates

There are 4 applications rounds available in 2026:

  1. 1 October to 31 December 2025
  2. 1 January to 31 March 2026
  3. 1 April to 30 June 2026
  4. 1 July to 30 September 2026
  5. 1 October to 31 December 2026

Grant applications will be assessed during the first week after a round closes.

Applicants will be advised if they have been successful or not within 4 weeks of a round closing.

Eligibility

Who can apply

  • Individuals who are permanent residents of Banyule.

Who cannot apply

  • Applicants who have received a sport travel grant within the previous 2 years.
  • Schools and churches.
  • Clubs with overdue fees or outstanding debt to us.

Criteria

Applicants must:

  • have a letter of support and confirmation from their sporting club/school or association
  • apply as a team or individual
  • have proof of costs to be incurred, for example airfare, accommodation or entrance fees
  • not have received this grant within the previous 2 years
  • not be a school or church.

What we will fund

Costs required for an individual to participate in the event or competition, including:

  • travel (transport and accommodation)
  • new uniforms required for participation
  • entry fees.

We will only fund costs that will be incurred for an event starting on or after the opening date of a grant round.

What we will not fund

  • Events that start before the opening date of a grant round.
  • Membership fees.
  • Transport and accommodation for parents/guardians.
  • Extra activities outside of the event.
  • Food.
  • Training occurring that is not part of the travel for competition.

Application

When to apply

  • Apply at any stage prior to any required travel.
  • Do not apply for retrospective funding (any costs incurred for an event/competition that has commenced before the opening date of the current grant round)
  • No need to have spent the funds you are applying for, but if you have not, you must supply accurate quotes for costs you will incur.

To apply:

  • read the guidelines and apply only if eligible
  • complete an application form online and provide all supporting documentation.

Quotes

  • You are required to submit proof of the costs incurred (for example, receipt of airfare, accommodation or entrance fees).
  • Each cost must be clearly identified and itemised within the application form
  • Your application will be assessed on the eligible amount you have submitted in the proof of costs section of the application form.
  • You cannot claim for costs that you do not submit proof for.

Apply for a sport travel grant

Assessment

Applications will be assessed after the grant round they submitted in closes.

All applicants will receive notification of the outcome in writing within one month of the grant round closing.

Grant agreement

Successful grant applicants will be required to sign a grant agreement that sets out conditions of the grant.

Acquittal

Within 6 months of the event/activity you must provide us with:

  • evidence that you participated in the event/activity
  • a short statement (no more than 250 words) about your experience
  • one image of the activity/event (we reserve the right to use this image for promotional purposes).

The acquittal needs to be submitted online.

Failure to acquit the grant satisfactorily may result in requests for grant money to be returned to us, and exclude the group from future grant rounds.

Accessibility

The grants process is open and accessible to everyone. You can access support if:

  • you need a printed copy of the guidelines, or a large print version.
  • you want to discuss the guidelines over the phone.
  • you need the guidelines in a video format with captions.
  • you want to talk to us about the guidelines using an Auslan interpreter.
