Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre upgrade and electrification

What we are seeking

We are seeking an investment of approximately $40M to fully electrify and upgrade Ivanhoe Aquatic to better meet community needs.

What it will deliver

We plan to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2028. To achieve this, all gas-consuming equipment must be replaced by electrical equipment and connected to solar power. Upgrading the Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre is a cornerstone in this commitment, alongside a substantial program of upgrades and modernisation to better meet the needs of our growing community.

Overview

The original Ivanhoe pool was constructed in the 1950s as a training pool for the 1956 Olympics. An expansion in the 1980s redeveloped the site to include indoor pools, fitness and change rooms. Decades later, the facilities are now ageing and in need of an upgrade.

Stage 1 of implementing a substantial upgrade program was completed in 2016, with Stage 2 yet to be funded.

Stage 2 will complete the job; ensuring Ivanhoe Aquatic has the modern facilities needed to meet the needs of our growing community. Works for Stage 2 will switch the centre to 100% renewable energy, significantly contributing to our efforts to reach its net zero emissions reduction target.

Currently, the centre relies on 2 gas boilers that consume about 8,000,000 MJ/yr and cost more than $100,000 to operate. The yearly carbon emissions are the same as 195 semi trailers making round trips from Melbourne to Sydney.

Electrifying the centre will remove all emissions from on-site operations, and the replacement electric heat pumps will be 3-5 times more energy efficiency than the existing boilers.

Why now?
Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre will soon undergo major upgrades to its pool facilities. This is an ideal time to install green initiatives in line with our commitment to having net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
