Creative Banyule: Arts and Culture Strategy 2023–2031 provides our long-term vision and framework for strengthening arts, culture and creativity across Banyule. The strategy recognises that arts and culture play a vital role in community wellbeing, social connection, cultural identity, economic development and creating a sense of place. It aligns with the Banyule Community Vision 2041 and supports our goal of being a thriving, inclusive and connected community.
Developed with input from more than 140 residents, the strategy acknowledges that creativity extends beyond traditional arts practice and includes everyday cultural participation, festivals, community activities, design, public art, creative industries and cultural expression. We recognise that arts and culture contribute to healthy communities, lifelong learning, local economic activity and stronger neighbourhood connections.
The strategy is guided by the vision: “Creative Banyule – where people, ideas and spaces are thriving and connected through arts, culture and creativity.”
Foster a sustainable and thriving creative sector
We will support artists, creative businesses and cultural organisations through networking, collaboration, capability building and improved access to creative spaces.
Enhance social connection, health and wellbeing
We will use arts and cultural activities to strengthen community relationships, inclusion, belonging and participation across all ages and backgrounds.
Celebrate First Nations culture
We will recognise and promote the history, knowledge, stories and cultural leadership of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and other First Nations communities.
Create equitable participation in arts and cultural experiences
We will reduce barriers to participation and ensure diverse communities can access, contribute to and shape Banyule’s cultural life.
Realise the creative potential of Banyule’s spaces and places
We will support public art, cultural infrastructure, community space activation, activity centres and investment in key cultural assets such as the Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub and the Banyule Art Collection.
Overall, the strategy positions arts and culture as essential to Banyule’s future, helping create a vibrant, inclusive and creative city where people, communities and places can thrive.
