In late 2025, the war memorial and cenotaph at Greensborough War Memorial Park will be relocated to the west of the park, close to the Homefront sculptures.

The new space was designed with Greensborough RSL. Work will be completed in time for next Anzac Day.

  • A new war memorial will be constructed to the western side of Greensborough War memorial Park.
  • The new war memorial will have a low memorial wall, allowing views across the park and enough space for ceremonial events to take place.
  • The rear of the new semi-circular memorial wall will have attractive planting to its rear embankment.
  • A new avenue of deciduous trees will line the new memorial entrance path.
  • The central cenotaph will be relocated from the current eastern war memorial to the new memorial space.
  • New cricket nets have been installed at another location in the park and the old cricket nets will be removed.

The project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Better Parks and Playgrounds Program.

Details of the plan

The realignment plan is oriented with north at the top. The proposed location for the new war memorial is along Ester Street towards the western side of Greensborough War Memorial Park. It will be between the existing Homefront sculpture area and the oval, north of the sports pavilion and new cricket nets. The major open space in the middle of the park is the oval.

Old memorial

The old memorial location is on the opposite corner of the oval in relation to the proposed location. It is also along Ester Street towards the eastern side of the Park closer to Henry Street.

The existing memorial at the old location is identified as an area marked for demolition will be returned to open space. This plan also notes support from the Victorian Government through the Better Parks and Playgrounds Program.

New memorial

The new memorial will occupy the area where the existing cricket nets will be demolished.

More precise positioning is based off the new location of the cenotaph, which will be 20m away from the edge of the existing park oval and south of the existing concrete path surrounding the cricket nets.

Proposed features

  • Relocated cenotaph at the centre of a paved circular area 13m in diameter with a feature paving finish.
  • Easterly hemisphere of the paved circular area is grounded by a new semicircular and angled memorial wall.
  • Angled memorial wall will be 0.8m high and will feature materials reused from the old war memorial wall
  • Back-side of the angled memorial wall will be a sloped garden bed tapering off to level out with the surrounding grassed open space.
  • Path 2m wide runs from the north to south of the circular area with a feature paving finish different to the circular area
  • Path 2m wide runs from the eastern edge of the paved circular area towards the cenotaph and then continues from the centre of the paved circle westerly for 20m
  • Portion of 20m path outside of the circular paved area creates a tree avenue that is lined with 8 new trees.
  • 8 new trees to the northern and southern sides of the path to create the new avenue.
  • New trees to the northern side of the avenue are placed in a way retain the Homefront sculpture 'Justin the Tracker Dog' between the trees.
  • New tree avenue connects to a realigned concrete footpath.
  • Realigned concrete footpath goes north around the memorial connecting the western carpark to Ester Street.
  • New Lone Pine tree is to be planted on the eastern side of the memorial in a grass area that is within 5m of the memorial
