Dog howling in an apartment

While it is normal for dogs to bark, it is not normal for a dog to bark at every noise or for long periods. Excessive barking can cause stress for the dog, the owner and their neighbours.

If you are experiencing a barking dog nuisance in your neighbourhood, we suggest you try talking to your neighbour. They may not be aware of the problem if the dog is only barking when they are out.

The Dispute Settlement Centre can help with mediation on 1300 372 888. If the matter is still unresolved, you can report it to us.

You must provide a diary recording the extent of barking.

Why is my dog barking?

Causes of excessive barking include boredom, fear, separation anxiety, territory protection or a medical condition. Some things you can try to reduce your dog’s nuisance barking are:

  • reduce barking triggers by blocking views of people passing or changing the location of your dog
  • toys and games such as puzzle feeders, Kong toys or chew toys can keep your dog happily occupied
  • doggy day care is a great way for dogs to socialise and expend energy
  • hire a dog walker if you can’t be home for long periods
  • soothing TV or music may comfort dogs
  • a safe, comfortable space of their own can help dogs feel more secure
  • plenty of exercise before you leave makes a dog less likely to become anxious or destructive.
