A historic day for Banyule
We were honoured to host the Freedom of Entry Parade and Ceremony on Sunday 5 October 2025, celebrating the Defence Force School of Signals (DFSS) and its enduring connection to our community.
Freedom of Entry, a tradition dating back to ancient Rome, is one of the highest civic honours a city can bestow. This year marked the first time in nearly a decade that Banyule granted this honour, reaffirming the deep ties between our city and the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
Based at Simpson Barracks in Yallambie, DFSS is the ADF’s specialist training centre for military communications and cyber operations. The barracks have been a cornerstone of Banyule’s military history since World War II and continue to house DFSS, Army Cadets, and other defence units.
The day began with a spectacular parade from Montmorency Station along Were Street, ending at Petrie Park for a formal ceremony and community morning tea. More than 200 members of the Army, Navy and Air Force from DFSS marched proudly, creating a memorable display of discipline and ceremony.
A highlight of the event was the traditional challenge where Victoria Police halted the parade and requested the unit declare its purpose. The Commanding Officer responded formally, Victoria Police Inspector Kevin O'Connell acknowledged their right to march and the parade continued to the applause of the gathered crowd.
During the ceremony, Mayor Cr Elizabeth Nealy acknowledged their right to exercise the Freedom of Entry into Banyule and was welcomed with a general salute before inspecting the unit on parade. The parade then advanced in review order, and the Commanding Officer gave the order for the unit to salute the citizens of Banyule with a general salute and present arms. Cr Nealy delivered a speech reflecting on the significance of the occasion before being farewelled, along with the principal guest, with a final salute.
The community turned out on a fresh Sunday morning to witness this historic occasion. It was not only a celebration of military heritage but also a reminder of the strong bonds between Banyule and those who serve our nation.
