Banyule staff plants trees in nursery

You might have noticed our tree planting contractors out and about now that the cooler weather is here.

The best time for planting trees is from April to September. This year we are busier than usual, thanks to funding from the Victorian Government’s North East Link Project.

We are planting 3,000 new trees this year – around 850 in local parks and the remainder as street trees across Banyule. Most will be advanced stock (about 1.5 m tall) and native species, with a selection of suitable exotic trees chosen to complement local character.

As part of a bareroot tree trial last year, we grew around 200 exotic trees in our plant nursery at our Parks depot in Bellfield. These trees will be used for street tree planting.

We plant during the cooler, wetter months so trees have a chance to establish and are not under stress as roots develop. Our tree planting contractors look after the juvenile trees for the first two years, making sure they are watered once a week during hot, dry weather.

We audit juvenile trees across the municipality, but we can’t see everything. If your tree is damaged or something seems off, please report it so we can check it out.
