For major festivals
We are working with Green my Plate to implement a re-usable crockery and cup system for all food vendors at major festivals. Participation in this program is compulsory.
We will work with successful vendors to explain how the program operates and to understand what serving ware is required for each vendor.
For smaller events and Malahang stall holders
Our smaller events and Malahang stall holders will continue to require the packaging noted on this page to be used by all stalls and vendors.
Packaging you should use
- ✅ Paper-based serving dishes (brown/white), including plates, bowls, napkins.
- ✅ Uncoated brown cardboard boxes and trays.
- ✅ PET plastic cups and bottles (clear plastic) and aluminum cans. Look for the recycle logo.
- ✅ Any reusable containers, including coffee cups or plastic tubs.
Items made of plastic (1,2,5), aluminum and paper can be recycled and are easily available.
Packaging you should not use
- ❌ No plant-based materials or products, as these items cannot be recycled and must go to landfill.
- ❌ No biodegradable or compostable packaging, as these items must also go to landfill.
About single-use cups
In Banyule, all single-use coffee cups must go to landfill.
When we see cups labelled as compostable or biodegradable, this does not mean they can be placed in a FOGO bin, as these products do not break down in our composting process. This generates a huge amount of waste from consuming a hot beverage.
About biodegradable claims
Many companies label their products with compostable and biodegradable logos, which may make it seem like a more sustainable products. They are not.
When choosing takeaway food/beverage packaging use 100% non-dyed paper items that can then be placed in the recycle bin.
