What we are seeking
We are seeking Victorian Government investment to upgrade Watsonia Railway Station and approve land use and design changes for the surrounding precinct.
What it will deliver
Upgrading Watsonia Railway Station will address accessibility issues, better integrate the station with the local shopping precinct, and deliver a practical parking solution that frees up land for mixed-use development.
Overview
There are significant opportunities to improve urban design outcomes at Watsonia Station and the surrounding precinct to support future residential growth and the recovery of local businesses impacted by the North East Link construction works.
It makes sense to undertake station upgrades and precinct improvements during the final phases of the North East Link construction to avoid prolonged disruption to Watsonia traders beyond NEL completion in 2028.
One of the highest priorities for our community is to bring Watsonia train station into compliance with accessibility standards.
Last overhauled in 1979, the station is not integrated into the local shopping village because of its location deep in the rail cutting.
The steep switchback ramps leading down to the station platforms are unsafe for many members of our community to use and are not compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
Ideally, we would like to see a complete station redevelopment, but in the short term, the highest priority is a lift down to the station platform so that everyone can access rail transport.
Changes to the Urban Design & Landscape Plan (UDLP) require an amendment to the plan by the Minister for Planning.
We estimate the multi-storey car park currently shown in the UDLP will cost millions to deliver, while creating visual bulk, accessibility challenges and perceived safety concerns.
We propose an alternative approach to:
- save millions of dollars by halving the size of the proposed multi-deck car park
- retain the existing Frensham Reserve car park to accommodate the balance of the required 637 car spaces
- free up land for mixed-use development, which could include affordable housing.
