Olympic Park's shared spaces

Olympic Park entry

We are thrilled to complete the transformation of Olympic Park years earlier than planned.

The park in Heidelberg West is a shared space for our whole community. It is for quiet enjoyment and play as well as for a range of sport and recreation activities. Seasonal sports clubs have sports field access for training and games, and residents can use the pitches for dog walking and other unstructured activities at other times. The new playground area with shaded seating and an electric BBQ is a great place to relax at any time.

The pavilion, opened last month, was the last stage of the Olympic Park Masterplan that was originally due to be completed in 2030. We thank the Victorian Government for its $8 million contribution to the $18.5 million project.

The new pavilion is seasonally allocated (just as the old one was) with summer tenants, Olympic Colts Cricket Club, and winter tenants, Heidelberg United Football Club.

Keep an eye out in future Banyule Banners for more about how community groups can use the pavilion during the day.

The completion of the Olympic Park project ensures it will continue to be one of our most significant sports and recreation locations. The area’s history as a training base for the 1956 Olympic Games is celebrated in its name and the Olympic Rings public art on site.

The park is also home to Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place, which was renovated as part of the masterplan. Barrbunin Beek means ‘happy place’ in Woiwurrung.

Visitors can learn about First Nations seasons by walking the Spirit Trail that winds through Olympic Park.
