Defence Force members in a line

Banyule City Council is proud to host the Freedom of Entry Parade and Ceremony on Sunday 5 October 2025, honouring the Defence Force School of Signals (DFSS) and its strong ties to our community.

Freedom of Entry dates to ancient Rome and remains one of the highest civic honours a city can bestow.

The DFSS is based at Simpson Barracks in Yallambie and is the Australian Defence Force’s specialist training centre for military communications and cyber operations. The barracks have been a key part of Banyule’s military history since World War II and remain home to DFSS, Army Cadets, and other defence units.

The parade will begin at Montmorency Station at 9.30am, proceed along Were Street, and conclude at Petrie Park for a formal ceremony and community morning tea. More than 200 members of the Army, Navy and Air Force from DFSS will take part in this significant event, the first Freedom of Entry held in Banyule in nearly a decade.

A highlight of the ceremony will be the traditional challenge, where Victoria Police will stop the parade and ask the unit to declare its purpose. The Commanding Officer will respond formally, the Mayor and Council will acknowledge their right to march, and the parade will continue.

Mayor Cr Elizabeth Nealy said the parade will be a proud moment for Banyule.

“This is a proud occasion for Banyule, as we come together to recognise the Defence Force School of Signals and the important role they play in our community,” Cr Nealy said.

“Freedom of Entry is the highest honour a city can bestow on a military unit. It reflects the deep trust, respect and connection between Banyule and the DFSS.

“I encourage everyone to join us, whether along Were Street or at Petrie Park, to celebrate this tradition of service, music and community spirit.”

The Commanding Officer of the DFSS Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Armstrong says the DFSS is honoured to be welcomed to Banyule.

“The Freedom of Entry parade is an enduring tradition that reflects the deep respect and strong connection between the Australian Defence Force and the communities we serve,” he said.

“For the Defence Force School of Signals, it is a privilege to be welcomed in this way by the City of Banyule.”
