Learn to Swim

The Banyule Aquatic Swim School (BASS) is a safe and supportive swim school, focusing on water safety and competency, which caters for students of all ages (from six months up) and of all swimming abilities.

All our instructors hold an Austswim or equivalent qualification and have a current Working with Children Check.

For more information call us on 9490 7111.

Parent-baby classes

These classes are for children 6 months to 3 years old, who are accompanied in the water by an adult actively participating in the class.

Three class levels reflect developing motor skills and children are encouraged to explore and develop skills at their own pace. Classes have a strong emphasis on safety and survival, water familiarisation and basic movement skills.

We do not submerge children but provide activities, songs and games to encourage children to submerge themselves with assistance.

Pre-school classes

Our classes for 3-5 year olds operate across six levels, ranging from the first stages of water exploration and familiarisation through to stroke development. Children are encouraged to explore and develop skills at their own pace and move between levels as they develop their skills. Lessons also focus on survival and water safety, which ensures a balanced approach to aquatic activities so that young swimmers have the skills they need to be safe in and around water.

School age classes

Children in school age classes progress at their own pace through the nine levels of the program. While stroke development is central to our program, we emphasise water safety and survival skills to help children be safe in and around water. The program includes games and theme-based classes to encourage students to enjoy their whole aquatic experience.

Squad enables those who have progressed through the learn to swim program to focus on fitness and a healthy lifestyle while refining and practising swimming strokes and water safety skills. Swimmers get the chance to set and beat personal best times at time trials and to compete in our swimming carnival.

Teenage classes

These classes help teenagers who want to enjoy a wide variety of water activities but haven’t yet developed the confidence or skills they need to enjoy experiences such as surfing, snorkelling and boating.

Adult classes

All adults are capable of learning to swim. As in all of our aquatic education programs participants work at their own level and in small groups with an instructor. We cater for those who have never learnt to swim or are fearful of water, through to adults who want to improve their swimming efficiency and stroke technique.

  • Beginner Class - for adults who have never had swimming lessons, have a fear of water or are unable to move through water without a buoyancy aid.
  • Intermediate Class - for adults who are comfortable in the water but cannot complete a full lap of any stroke.
  • Advanced Class – for adults wanting to improve their already effective stroke and technique, as well as the distance they can swim.

Stroke correction

These classes are designed for adults who are already capable swimmers but want to improve the finer elements of their stroke. Areas covered include breathing, arm phases and kicking. This class is excellent for people wanting to compete in a triathlon and strengthen their swim component.

Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion

We offer the Royal Life Saving Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion courses which offer participants the skills and knowledge to save lives, ensure their own safety, and learn to recognise, assess and react to aquatic emergency situations. Both programs include CPR. You must be aged 11 years or over for Bronze Star and 14 years or over for Bronze Medallion, and be able to swim 40 metres non-stop.

Tuition fees for aquatic education programs are payable on a semester (ie two term) basis, with payments made at Reception. Semester One covers state school terms one and two while Semester Two covers terms three and four.

Aqua Adventures

Operating during school holidays from 2:30pm-4:30pm weekdays as advertised, these sessions give children a fun and entertaining afternoon of swimming and water play. This program is provided as part of the normal pool entry fee and is free for children enrolled and fully paid in our learn to swim program.

School holiday intensives

Each school holiday period, we offer a week of intensive swimming lessons, with small class sizes, for pre-schoolers and school-aged children. This is a great way to kick start your child’s swimming abilities.

School holiday activities

We offer daily activities for school age children from 9am-11am, which includes cooking, art and craft, games, drama workshops and much more.

Health considerations

Please note: For reasons of public health, parents should ensure that:

  • Children participating in parent/baby classes’ wear an aqua nappy at all times while in the pools.
  • Children of any age who are not toilet trained should wear an aqua nappy while swimming
  • Any swimmer who has recently had diarrhoea should not attend swimming classes or use the pools for at least five days after symptoms have stopped.
  • If your child has a cough or cold, you should let them recover fully before resuming classes.
