Picture Watsonia: A Vision for Watsonia Village

Watsonia.jpg

Throughout 2014 Council worked with the local community and other key stakeholders to understand what is truly valued in Watsonia’s shopping street, railway station area and surrounds, and what could change into the future. We spoke to local residents, business owners, State Government agencies, Local, State and Federal Government representatives, local Councillors and staff from across Council.

A Vision for the Future of Watsonia Village

We asked people to look towards Watsonia Village in 2050 and imagine how it could become a more vibrant centre. This led to developing a draft vision for Watsonia called Picture Watsonia: A Vision for Watsonia Village. Consultation on the draft was done from 24 September 2014 until 24 October, 2014. The comments received contributed to the preparation of the final vision, which was adopted by Council at the Council meeting on Monday 15 December 2014. The Council report and minutes are from this page.

Appendices: Summary and Analysis of the Watsonia 2050 Engagement Process

Picture Watsonia is driven by a vision statement to articulate the aspirations of the community and describe what is possible to achieve in the future. It identifies many ideas to help Watsonia address the challenges of a growing and changing population, while strengthening and celebrating its character. It gives a long term direction so that local people and stakeholders can see how any future projects, programs and advocacy actions can help achieve the vision.

A summary version, A Snapshot of Picture Watsonia, was distributed to local residents in April 2015 to raise further awareness of the ideas in the main document and the Council initiatives that have progressed in the area since it was prepared.

How Can We Create Better Public Space in Watsonia?

Council received a lot of feedback on Picture Watsonia from local residents, which included support for the provision of a public park somewhere in Watsonia Village.

We have been collecting thoughts from the community on the idea of providing a pop up (temporary) park between the Holy Spirit Church and the Library on Ibbottson Street Watsonia. This leaflet gives some more information about this idea, and shows some examples of what this park could look like.

Further consideration of this idea will be reported to Council at a future meeting. Final dates and updates will be available from this page.
