Parking and Traffic

Council deals with more than 3000 traffic and parking issues per year. While a large part of our work involves discussing and investigating traffic and parking concerns raised by residents, a significant amount of work is also undertaken investigating ways to improve traffic routes, intersections, public transport, bicycle and freight movements.

Traffic

As the population of the metropolitan area increases and the density of residential development increases, traffic volumes also rise. This traffic increase can be a concern to residents, but there is no easy solution. Council can take steps to try to achieve a fairer distribution of traffic around the residential area (by encouraging more use of main roads and less use of narrow residential streets), but it has to be careful that it doesn’t just shift the traffic “problem” to another street.

Residents can also be concerned about speeding motorists. Council, VicRoads, Victoria Police and the Department of Justice are working together to try and modify the driving behaviour of motorists to improve safety.

Requests by residents for measures to reduce speeding and unsafe driving go through an extensive investigation and consultation process. The extent of the problem is ascertained and then prioritised against other requests. Council provides funding for new traffic measures each year, but the funding is limited. As a result, not all requests are approved, and those that are may not be implemented as quickly as residents would like.

Parking

Parking issues can also be a concern for our residents, visitors, shoppers, traders, workers and commuters. In certain areas such as shopping centres, there are more people wanting to park than spaces available. Resolving parking concerns can be difficult at times, particularly balancing the needs of residents, traders, shoppers, etc.
