Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub - construction update

Published on 18 September 2020

While the latest construction restrictions have slowed down progress, work on the impressive Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub is continuing with an estimated completion time of late 2020.

$34.5million (made up of $29.34million construction costs plus consultants, planning and other costs) is being invested to bring this much anticipated project to life. The project also includes upgrades to the Centre Ivanhoe with a new kitchen and upgrades to the fire safety equipment to bring the centre up to modern standards.

The vision for this facility is a community hub where people are inspired to think, study, create and enjoy an enriching program of cultural and learning experiences.

Something for everyone, all under one roof

With free access to library and art collections, both real and digital and a range of learning programs, art exhibitions, performances and creative activities the space will offer something for everyone.

The building has been designed to include inclusive, versatile and accessible spaces, including community meeting rooms, lounges, a café, roof terrace and an outdoor square.

The building will also be home to Maternal and Child Health services and our customer service centre.

Arts and Culture

The hub includes several arts spaces designed to encourage creativity and collaboration, and showcase a range of artistic endeavours.
Our program will provide a dynamic mix of events, activities and performance together with outstanding resources and art exhibitions to create an inclusive, community-centred creative hub that welcomes everyone.

Art Gallery 275: a museum standard art gallery, home to the Banyule Art Collection and curated exhibitions.
Loft 275: a flexible gallery space for Banyule-based artists and community cultural groups.
Dedicated artist studios: for Banyule-based creatives to develop and display artworks.
Yarra-me Djila Theatrette: a dynamic space for talks and performances, connected to a landscaped outdoor amphitheatre.

From art exhibitions and musical performances, experimental media and cultural dance, to hands on workshops and recreational activities, we plan to have lots of amazing events and activities offered at the hub. Like most things at the moment the program is dependent on COVID-19 restrictions.
