Proud to belong in Banyule

Wed 7 March, 2018

Banyule Council is celebrating Cultural Diversity Week with two key events on the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Harmony Day, Wednesday 21 March.

Harmony Day Storytime in the Park has been planned and will be hosted by Yarra Plenty Regional Library with stories and activities for under-school-aged children and their carers in the open space next to Crampton Crescent off Finlayson Street in Rosanna Parklands.

Taste of Harmony will be hosted by local residents from different cultural backgrounds and celebrate their stories, memories and food. Your $10 Taste of Harmony booking fee will be donated to the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Stepping Stones Project.

This year’s Cultural Diversity Week theme is ‘Proud to belong’.

Banyule Mayor Cr Mark Di Pasquale said the theme made good sense.

“In fact we’re told in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity Identity, Diversity and Pluralism that cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature,” he said.

“Banyule Council is committed to helping all members of this community with every opportunity to participate, interact and share their cultures so they feel proud to belong and be part of the ever changing richness of Banyule,” he said.

Today, almost 50 per cent of Victorians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas. We come from 200 countries, speak over 260 languages and follow more than 130 different faiths.
