More Bell Street Mall improvements on the way

Tue 6 February, 2018

Improvement works will soon kick off at Bell Street Mall in Heidelberg West thanks to over $440,000 in Federal Government funding.

The ageing public toilet will be replaced, flag poles will be installed and comfort zones will be set up to make it a more welcoming place to visit and shop. Works are due to be complete by June.

Bell Street Mall is at the heart of Heidelberg West’s regeneration so stimulating employment and improving social services, social connectedness and lifelong learning is key.

Currently, Council’s community services co-working space in the Mall at Shop 48 – The Harmony Centre has 11 not-for-profit community agencies offering home club, community information sessions, financial counselling and there is space for other agencies that can run programs of benefit to residents.

As well, Bell Street Mall Traders Association actively markets Bell Street Mall with festivals and events such as cultural diversity week, Lunar New Year celebration, Eid Festival events, Ramadan events and other community activities that promote cultural diversity and encourage locals to visit the area.

All this is part of a multi-pronged approach to revitalise Bell Street Mall starting to have an impact: since 2011, requests by Victoria Police for CCTV footage in response to crime reports have gone from 57 to just eight in 2017.

Banyule Mayor Cr Mark Di Pasquale said the steady improvements at Bell Street Mall were encouraging.

“While shop upgrades remain shop owners’ responsibility, the effort being put in by traders and at Shop 48 are part of a gradual revitalisation going on,” he said.

“The East African flavour of the cafes and fashion retailers at Bell Street Mall are becoming a real draw card.

"The Bell Street Mall Traders Association has planned tours of the precinct during cultural diversity week and I urge everyone to book in to a tour to get a real insight.”
