Celebrating youth culture is all the rage

Wed 29 August, 2018

Back by popular demand, and for the eighth year, YouthFest will offer an extravaganza of music, activities, and a celebration of youth culture in a free half-day festival in September.

Run by young people for young people, YouthFest is an all ages, fully inclusive and supervised youth festival that is drug, alcohol and smoke free.

“The success of YouthFest is the way it involves young people in all elements of decision making to ensure the festival reflects what young people want.” Said Stefanie Stamatiou, YouthFest Officer.

“Music has always been at the heart of the festival, and this year we’ve invited over 30 local bands and DJs to perform on two event stages throughout the day.”

New this year is the Makers Space Market area. An exciting space where young entrepreneurs will sell works they have made. Supported with a free business coaching session, these young people will have the tools to take their creativity to the broader community in a commercial way.

This year’s line up of activities will have something for everyone. From a bigger than ever sports zone, rides, games and a host of accessible activities, to arts and crafts including a Henna tattooing, body and hair art, a clothes swap in the Hall, a silent disco and more.

“The festival is a chance for young people to have a fun, free day and celebrate their culture while enjoying all the best young local talent,” said Mayor Cr Di Pasquale. “And even better, it’s happening in their Banyule backyard!”

“It also provides a welcoming place for them to engage with Banyule Youth Services and other local agencies working to promote positive health, wellbeing, education and support for young people in our community.”

Attendance at the festival has grown each year, with last year reaching participation numbers of close to 3,500 young people.

The Festival is produced by Banyule Council in partnership with FReeZA, a Victorian Government youth development program providing young people, aged 12-25, with the opportunity to attend affordable accessible music and cultural events.
