The Home Harvest Feast is an annual celebration of home grown produce and local food. All growers are invited to celebrate in the harvest and the joys of local food by sharing a delicious community meal created by trained cooks using your home or community-grown product. In 2018 the day will feature a casual afternoon picnic.
Take a look at the video from 2016 to learn about the day and the experiences.
What does it involve?
- Register to be a grower for the Home Harvest Feast.
- Spend the summer growing produce and in the week leading up to the Feast donate some produce in return for your tickets.
- Attend the Feast in February 2018 and enjoy a delicious meal and a great day!
What to grow and how much
All types of produce are welcome. If you are growing something different or exotic please let us know when registering. If you're a little stuck, here are some suggestions of what you could grow - zucchini, eggplant, tomato, capsicum, silverbeet, carrot, pumpkin, cucumber, beets, lettuce greens and herbs.
Produce drop-off will take place in the week leading up to the Feast. You will receive your ticket for the Feast when you drop off your produce off. A good way to work out how much produce to donate is to think of a quantity that would feed you and your guests. More information regarding the drop off times and locations will be provided early 2018.
If you are new to growing there are some great resources available to help you:
Bulleen Art & Garden fact sheets and workshops
As a Grower you will receive regular newsletters including advice and guidance and will be invited to take part in community events and workshops such as food swaps where you can get to know other growers.
And finally – don’t panic!
Don’t let the fear of having a bad season in your garden put you off registering as a Grower. If, come Feast time, you are unable to donate the amount of produce you planned it will be ok and this will be balanced out by the generous donations of Growers who have had a great season. And if you end up with no produce there are always other ways you can contribute to the Feast such as with your time to help us set up and tidy away.
The Home Harvest Feast sits within a calendar of Harvest Month events. As a Grower you will also receive exclusive details on workshops, food swaps and special events taking place. The full program is coordinated by Local Food Connect, with details being released closer to the time.
