Buying, selling or giving away pets

Anyone who wants to sell or give away a puppy, kitten, dog or cat will need to be on the Pet Exchange Register and have a source number.

The register was introduced 1 July 2019 to help regulate and monitor anyone acting unlawfully when selling dogs and cats.

Buying or adopting a pet

Before you bring a new dog or cat home, look up the source number to check the validity of the breeder or individual.

Is a source number needed no matter what?

When a dog or a cat is advertised for sale or free to a good home a source number is a must.
There are only a few occasions when a source number isn't needed - for all the details, visit the Victorian Government site Agriculture: Pet Exchange Register.
