Support to refugees and asylum seekers

Refugee welcome zone

A welcome zone is a local government area that welcomes refugees into its community: recognising human rights, demonstrating compassion and enhancing cultural and religious diversity. We became one in 2014.

We also acknowledge the contributions refugees have made to Australian society in medicine, science, engineering, sport, education and the arts.

Local programs and services for refugees and asylum seekers

We offer a range of services that provide material aid, healthcare, English language classes, housing and legal support.

Back your neighbour campaign

This campaign was created to lobby the Australian Government to reverse the 2018 cuts to the Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) program. We are a member of the Mayoral Taskforce Supporting People Seeking Asylum, formed as a result of those cuts. The program was for people who are seeking asylum and are living in the community while waiting for their claims to be processed.
