Council is preparing a local housing strategy with the community. Over the coming months this page will be updated to include information and describe progress.

Introduction

The Banyule Housing Statement, was adopted in 1997. New population and housing trends have emerged since then and the State Government has created a strategy to manage metropolitan change and give direction to local housing strategies.

Housing is influenced by demographic, environmental, physical, social and economic factors. Some of these include:

• Population growth
• Access to infrastructure and services
• Housing costs
• Lifestyle choices
• Changing household patterns
• Natural and built environments
• Social and cultural values
• Employment opportunities

Background Information

Council has collected information, conducted research and analysis to appreciate some of the key factors that influence local housing needs. These include:

• The Municipal Population Snapshot, this gives key demographic features for Banyule and population trends.
• The Medium Density Housing Survey, this comes from people living in medium-density homes in Banyule.  This gives information about demographic profile, employment and education, lifestyle and housing choice.
• The Draft Northern Regional Housing Statement has been produced to give direction to regional housing opportunities.
• Further Demographic Information on our local community profile.

Past consultation includes a community discussion session on 25th October 2006, a public survey, stakeholder sessions and other community sessions. The following documents give summary information from stakeholder and community sessions.

Background Report & Housing Issues Paper

The following Background Report has been prepared to describe an analysis of strategic planning and policy aspects that may influence housing in Banyule. This report was developed in consultation with the local community and housing industry stakeholders.

Community consultation and input from representatives of the housing industry has helped identify key housing issues for Banyule. A draft list of issues is given in the link below.

A detailed Issues Paper gives more description on these issues. This paper will play a vital role in aiding ongoing consultation and preparation of a local housing strategy.  This paper was developed in consultation with the local community and housing industry stakeholders.

Draft Housing Strategy

Council has recently adopted a Draft Housing Strategy.  Local resident, business, community groups and others with an interest in local housing are invited to give feedback on the Draft Strategy.  The following link lets you download the Draft Housing Strategy.  The draft strategy can also be viewed at Council Service Centres.

Consultation carried out on the Draft strategy guided the preparation of a Final Draft, this included the receipt and consideration of submissions.  The link below gives a summary of issues raised by submitters and responses to these issues.
