Banyule Community Plan

Draft Banyule Community Plan is now available for public comment.

The Community Plan contains a Vision for the municipality by 2020.  It describes the priority issues identified by the community over the past 18 months using a rigorous process of community consultation.  More than 2,000 residents have contributed their ideas to the Plan.  It also outlines the Projects that have been developed in conjunction with the community to respond to these issues over the next three years.

Projects contained in the Community Plan have a focus on:

  • Reducing graffiti
  •  Improving community safety
  • Improving public transport
  • Celebrating the diversity of the community
  • Improving facilities in our parks
  • Living more sustainably
  • Improving access to broadband internet
  • Making parts of Banyule ‘greener’
  • Encouraging children to be more physically active
  • Capturing our history

An important feature of the Community Plan is that it is developed and owned by the community, and the community is responsible for its implementation.

The closing date for comments is Friday 13 November 2009.

What is a Community Plan

A Community Plan captures the community's view of a vision, priorities and actions to enhance the physical, social and economic wellbeing of the local area.

A key aspect of community planning is that the process and output is owned by the community rather than just Council.  The process is facilitated by Council, but many of the community priorities are likely to be in areas outside the traditional scope of local government activity.

These ‘whole-of-community' priorities can then be used as input into local, State and Federal Government planning as well as by community organisations and peak bodies.

The Community Plan will help to define a vision for Banyule's future and identify what needs to be done - by Council, by residents, by community groups and by local businesses to achieve that future.

Why does Banyule want to develop a Community Plan?

Banyule Council has decided to take a proactive approach to shaping the future of the municipality by developing a Community Plan in partnership with residents, community groups and businesses.

The community planning process seeks to strengthen communities and increase interest, understanding and involvement in decision making about things that are important to the local community

The process of developing the Community Plan, and its product, will give Council an improved understanding of the issues that are of central importance to residents, and the type of responses required.

This understanding will assist Council's planning and resource allocation decisions, and position Council to advocate more effectively on behalf of its community.  It will serve as a mechanism for developing partnerships with key community stakeholders, allowing for co-operative approaches to addressing priority community issues.
