Community Access

We are committed to assisting people with disabilities take an active role in the community. As well as providing support and information, our Access and Integration Planner works to improve opportunities and services for this group of residents.

We have a "Playground for All" located at Malahang Reserve, cnr Southern and Oriel Roads, West Heidelberg. The playground is designed for all children, including those with a disability.

Council was one of the first with a Community Inclusion and Access Policy and Implementation Plan, which was lodged with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

Council also has a Disability Reference Group comprising Community Representatives, Councillors and Council Officers. This group advises Council on the needs and promotes the interests of people with disabilities to Council and through Council, to the wider community.

Communicating with People with a Disability Booklet

Banyule Council has produced a resource booklet to help people communicate positively and appropriately with people with a disability.

It is designed for people in the community e.g. taxi/bus drivers, local businesses, schools and volunteers, staff in Council programs and also the family and carers of people with a disability.
