Weeds and Pests

Weeds

Environmental weeds are plants that invade bushland and natural areas. They are often plants that have escaped from gardens or agricultural areas when their seeds have travelled via wind, water, birds' droppings or via garden waste that has been dumped in parklands by thoughtless people. They create huge problems in natural areas, displacing indigenous species, decreasing biodiversity and simplifying ecosystems.

You can help make Banyule weed free by:

  • not planting known environmental weeds in your garden
  • learning to identify and control environmental weeds
  • never dumping weeds or garden waste
  • replacing environmental weeds with locally indigenous plants
  • educating family and friends about environmental weeds
  • joining a 'Friends' group and helping to control weeds in bushland areas.

Pests

Pest animals prevent our local animals from surviving or thriving in their natural habitat.  Pests are everyone’s responsibility and usually require a community effort to control.
