Council has recognised the importance of local action against global warming and climate change. Through the Cities for Climate ProtectionTM program Council has agreed upon an Emissions Reduction Goal and developed a Greenhouse Action Strategy (GAS). The objectives of the GAS are:
To achieve the emissions reduction goals set for the corporate and community sectors of Banyule To promote and ensure efficient energy use in Council operations, buildings, street lighting, the wider community, business and industry to achieve greenhouse gas reductions To increase the use and generation of renewable energy in Banyule To develop and foster an understanding of the enhanced greenhouse effect and increase the participation of Council staff and the community in measures necessary to respond to it To reduce reliance on private vehicles as a mode of transport and to encourage and provide opportunities for alternative transport options To develop partnerships between Council, local business, neighbouring councils and community groups to facilitate program development and establish a collaborative approach towards greenhouse gas abatement To reduce the amount of residential, commercial and Council generated waste going to landfill.
Council – By 2005/06, Council had reduced emissions from its own operations by 3% below 1996/97 levels. Council emissions 1996/97 to 2005/06 and target 2010 emissions (measured in tonnes of Carbon Dioxide-equivalent or tCO2e):

The Greenhouse Action Strategy will take place alongside Banyule's Waste Minimisation Strategy, Draft Municipal Transport Strategy, Environment Policy and Strategy and State of the Environment Report to provide complete environmental protection within Banyule.
A requirement of the CCPTM program is continual monitoring and reporting of energy consumption within Council and community. These annual results are published in the Greenhouse Action Strategy and Council’s State of the Environment Report.
The Greenhouse Action Strategy is a working document and as such will be reviewed annually to take into account new technologies, changes in legislation and funding opportunities an increased awareness and participation of Council and the community alike in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
